What is Dharma

What is Dharma? There is no translation in English that captures its essence. It is sometimes loosely translated as "Religion" or "Duty" but that falls short. In my opinion, Vinobha Bhave best summarizes "Dharma". During his daily address on "Bhagwad Gita" to the fellow inmates of Yervada jail, he explained: Dharma are all the acivities that one has to perform understanding the following two aspects: 1) a person and entirety of the nature including fellow humans, animals, plants, etc. are one. Therefore, all activities to be targeted towards the betterment of entire world; and 2) Based on one's gunas, perform all activities in compatible with those gunas....i.e. follow your varna. For example if a person who can only think about trading and revenue generation (Bania) will not be a perform or stay happy working as a professional even if it is very prestigious and financially rewarding. Thus, the crux of the matter is to do whatever one is best at and keeping in mind betterment of the entire universe.
